NTI scheme's requirements have been developed based on ETI base code, ILO conventions & best CSR practices. It has been developed to meet compliances related to labor laws. NTI is not related to any other similar certification scheme / standard (government / private).

NTI focuses on

CHILD LABOUR PROHIBITION

Child labour refers to the use of persons below 14years in labour processes. While there are still certain labour processes that employ children, the NTI looks to make sure that no adolescent (aged between 14 and 18) employed in hazardous conditions and occupations.

FORCED LABOUR PROHIBITION

This involves a situation where a person is cajoled into working for purposes other than payment, such purposes include and are not limited to payment of debt, escape from violence and intimidation and immigration. The NTI looks to greatly reduce the incidence as it a form of human slavery and statistics say that 5 in every 1000 person is trapped in forced labour.

WORKING HOURS ARE NOT EXCESSIVE

It has been proven that excessive work hours lead to deteriorating productivity and health of workers hence it is pertinent that work hours are set with consideration to workers, their physical and mental well being. It is important that the 40hour work week standard is maintained, whether as a part time worker or full time.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salaries are the reason why most people work, and it is important that these salaries are paid promptly and regularly. It is important to safeguard the interest of employers as unpaid salaries and benefits have links to forced labour. Also, when production increases it is important to see that salaries and wages rise likewise, acting as incentive for more work and increasing the economic stand of the workers.

REGULAR EMPLOYMENT IS PROVIDED

Regular employment is the consistent employment of a worker over an extended time period and comes with some benefits such as subsidised healthcare, union involvement, paid leaves et al. It’s important to have workers on permanent employment contracts as they are less prone to random sacking.

HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK PLACE

Work places need to be made safe and free of health risks for workers. It is involved in promoting positive well being as well as preventing injuries and wellness. Employers should make it possible for their employees to go around their jobs with the barest threat to their health. Protective gears and precautions should be put in place in work places that are more dangerous e.g Mining sites, construction sites etc. Work places should have a medical centre to attend to workers in case of any health scare.

FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION AND COLLECTIVE BARGAINING

Freedom of association is a right of any worker, it allows the worker to form and join alliances as they deem fit. It also frowns on forceful coercion of workers to join groups and unions and prohibits employer’s interference in workers unions. The collective bargaining tool is the workers’ best means of making their stand on company policies and changes needed. It helps in inclusiveness and promotion of peace and democratic participation of workers in policy making processes.

ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT AT WORK PLACE

It is important that the work environment is conducive, not hostile and stress free. A conducive work environment helps increase productivity and well being of the employees.

SECURITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The workplace should be made safe and workers safety must be assured. Workplace injuries should be kept at a minimum, this in turns aids mental and physical well being of the workers.

COMPLIANCE WITH WORKPLACE RULES AND REGULATIONS

Workplace regulations are needed to ensure that employees are comfortable and do their jobs effectively. A stable work environment protects the employees and the employers from lawsuits. Companies are required to have set rules guiding employee behaviour while at work.
